Artist Profile: Marc Fields, trombone

Marc Fields has been a freelance jazz trombonist in the Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana areas for the last 45 years. He is a 1975 graduate of the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music with a B.M. in trombone performance. During the summer of 1970, he had the opportunity to study with the great saxophonist, composer and arranger Oliver Nelson. This had a great impact on his concept of music, both as an instrumentalist and as a composer. Fields has performed with numerous jazz and popular music icons such as Eddie ”Lockjaw” Davis, Kenny Garret, Mulgrew Miller, Steve Wilson, Billy Hart, Jimmy Heath and Stevie Wonder, as well as had six world tours with the late Ray Charles. His own sextet has recorded the CD Salutaris Plates, which has received national critical acclaim. Since retiring from his post in 2022 as adjunct professor of jazz trombone at the University of Cincinnati, a position he held for 26 years, he now devotes his time to practicing his instrument, continuing to compose music and being thankful for opportunities to keep doing what he’s doing.
